Do you remember when the desire to learn a new skill, whether it was Spanish, Java, quilting, etc., meant finding as many resources as possible, reading for hours, and then remembering and discerning all that material into your new talent? It didn’t work that often, and when it did, was a monumental task only accomplished through immense amount of desire and dedication.
And this was back in 2005.
Fast forward to the present and we find that e-learning platforms have broken through the “boredom barrier” to be more exciting and interactive, and, most importantly, performance improvement can be successfully measured.
So, what are companies doing to make e-learning actually interactive and fun? These three companies have made it a blast to learn new skills.
Duolingo is an app that gamifies language learning by breaking down each language into a number of lessons that forces a user to successfully answer questions in order to move on. As you progress through the lessons, they become more difficult and you advance to higher levels and accumulate more experience points. Throughout your experience, you can then compete with anyone in your network to see who has attained the most points.
This technique is so effective, that an eight-week, independent study performed by Queens College found that using Duolingo for 34 hours covered the same material as the first college semester of Spanish.
Codecademy is teaching the world how to code through their online education platform. As with Duolingo, each programming language is broken down into bite-size lessons that can be accomplished in as little as five minutes. The amazing part of their platform is how it forces users to replicate actual code and are provided immediate feedback about its correctness.
As you progress, the platform has stopping points in which you must utilize your new coding abilities to create simple to more complex programs. This cements the learning and provides a sense of accomplishment.
It’s an amazing platform that has had success with past non-technical alumni creating beautiful pieces of work.
Omega Performance is disrupting the credit training industry with e-learning courses that are developed to be at least 75% interactive, maintaining high learner interest levels that enhances understanding and application of the material. This is accomplished through “check your understanding” quizzes on lessons covered, interactive graphic animations, thought-provoking case studies, and on-demand resources.
Each course is broken down into smaller chunks to make learning easier. For Omega Performance, each course consists of between five-to-eight modules and each module contains three-to-five components.
Additionally, pre- and post-assessments are taken for each module to allow your organization to flexibly view and manipulate training result data for one learner, a group of learners, or across the enterprise. This provides the organization with the data needed to benchmark training standards and fine-tune learning objectives to suit each individual learner’s unique needs.
All of this can be performed any time of day from anywhere in the world.
Technology is a wonderful thing.
Because of these new, inventive online platforms, old methodologies to learning new skills is quickly disappearing and a better, more interactive experience is beginning to take place. They’re making learning easier and more fun than ever before.
So, what will you learn next?
